No fault

Last night Zidane was sent off for headbutting an Italian player at the end of the World Cup final, bringing a glittering career to an ignominious end.

Commented team mate William Gallas:

“Sometimes when you have a player who is very clever and says something to you then maybe you are angry and want to ‘kill’ that player.

Maybe, and I say maybe, he (Zidane) has made a mistake.”

According to French coach Raymond Domenech the Italian player, Materazzi, “got Zidane sent off”:

“When one has to put up with what Zidane had to and the referee doesn’t do anything, one understands. You can’t excuse it, but you can understand it.”

How exactly did Materazzi provoke Zidane into assaulting him?

Domenech, unfortunately, is not clear on this question:

“Something must have happened but I don’t know what. I don’t think he decided out of the blue to headbutt him.”
